Hello and welcome to the West of England School and College website!

We’ve been providing education and care for young people with visual impairment since 1838. Only just recently we’ve been designated a High Performing Specialist School by the Department for Children, Schools and Families and Ofsted inspectors are equally impressed with what we provide.

The School Inspection report states: The excellent ethos of care and support among the whole school community enables pupils to thrive and develop into mature young people. Pupils’ enjoyment of school life is outstanding as is their awareness of the importance of leading healthy lifestyles.

The report also quotes a parent as saying: “The school makes an exceptional difference to the lives of these children”.

But don’t just take our word for it. Click on the videos and hear what the learners think.

Michelmores 200 mile golfathon raises £2,000!

A round of golf that took 13 hours to play 18 holes has raised £2,000 for the young people at our school and college. The Michelmores' Golfathon was a round of golf with a difference as each of the 18 holes played were on different courses and took the participants on a 200 mile trip around some of the major Golf Clubs in Devon.

The team consisted of Michelmores partners Simon Barnet and Tony Cockayne, the law firm's Practice Director, Andrew Lovell, and Andrew Richards, a partner at chartered accountants Francis Clark.  Each raised sponsorship from friends and collegues enabling a cheque for £2,000 to be handed to Gemma Boyland, Fundraising and PR Officer, of the West of England School and College.

Andrew Lovell said: "It took some organising and was a very long, wet day in June but it was very worthwhile to raise funds for such a worthy cause. We started at 5.30am and were exhausted by the end of it but managed three pars and a birdie on the last hole of the day at Woodbury Park where we finished at 6.30pm.  We were pretty pleased with that.

"We are very grateful for the cooperation of all the clubs involved.  We couldn't have achieved this unusual round of golf without their support and generosity."

Gemma Boyland added: "We are delighted that Andrew and the team made this magnificent effort which raised a significant amount of money. The Michelmores team are incredibly supportive of our charity and have been wonderful in so many ways. Over the past year they have a not only raised money for us but they have also supported our events, welcomed learners into their workplace on work experience placements and have got their hands dirty on renovation projects at our campus. We are truly grateful for their ongoing support."

The Michelmores team remain undaunted about the prospect of repeating their Golfathon next year and are considering making the challenge harder by spreading the 18 courses required across an even wider geographical area.

Andrew Lovell concluded; "We would love to do it again and increase the challenge but it's going to take some planning to make it an even longer golf drive."

ACCOUNTANTS HOST RACE EVENT FOR CHARITY

Exeter based chartered accountants Haines Watts organised their very own Glorious Goodwood Race Day fundraising event at Exeter City Football Club raising over £800 for us!  40 guests from the local business community were welcomed with a Pimm’s reception and enjoyed a Devon cream tea whilst they had a flutter on the horses.

Haines Watts, had John Hearne a professional tipster on hand to weigh up the financial risks of each race.  The charity was on to a sure bet as they received all profits made by local bookmaker Joe Oliver of Dick Oliver Limited.

Nick Agg-Manning of Land Rover Experience West Country gave not one but two exciting Land Rover Experience days as prizes and acted as charity auctioneer.   The fabulous prizes generously donated from local businesses included a supper and wine tasting at the luxurious Devon Wine School, eight tickets to the last race of the season at Newton Abbot Racecourse & Conference Centre and fine dining in the prestigious Michael Caines restaurant at The Royal Clarence.  The resulting bidding frenzy raised £500 for the charity.

Martin Harris Partner at Haines Watts says: “I’d like to think we had as much, if not more fun as those actually at Glorious Goodwood! It was a wonderful afternoon, a very exciting way of fundraising and an opportunity to network with fellow professionals. I’d like to thank all those who kindly supported us including Trugs award winning florists and Thorntons together with local businesses who generously donated prizes for the charity auction.”

FIVE FANTASTIC SKYDIVERS

LOCAL ACCOUNTANTS GET ARTISTIC IN AID OF CHARITY

Exeter based chartered accountants Haines Watts swapped their calculators for inks and rollers to create works of art for their newly refurbished boardroom which they intend to hire out to other companies to raise money for the West of England School and College for young people with little or no sight.

Haines Watts which offers advice to small and medium size businesses, delivering financial and taxation solutions to clients, occupies prestigious offices on Southernhay West.  The company is looking to offer their newly refurbished boardroom to local businesses to hold meetings, interviews and presentations for a nominal fee with all monies going directly to support us as their  selected 'Charity of the Year'.

A residents view...

I am a resident at the West of England College and what I enjoy most of all, is having the opportunity to go out during the weekends on educational trips that are organised by either the students or the members of staff that are working on the weekends.

One parent's view...

Jennie is happy to go to College and talks about it a great deal. She is now more confident and seems more mature. Jennie is definitely more independent now and is willing to try out a range of skills/tasks at home. The College have made her achieve this.
